KYLE SLAVE

Included in the Texas Hays County “Adopt a Cemetery ” program, the Kyle Slave Cemetery is one of the most astonishing projects that we have encountered. Adjacent to a well-maintained “white only” cemetery on Old Stage Coach Rd, the Kyle Slave Cemetery had endured extreme monument decay and understory growth. We were commissioned to lead an archaeological effort uncovering hidden monuments, then mapping their location, and recording the marker’s condition. When hired, we were told of a dozen or so stones that were in various states of deterioration. As our excavation and mapping continued we uncovered nearly 200 hundred marked grave sites, and later projected that several hundred more existed as unmarked. As part of the overall plan, an entrance was established to the slave cemetery, as well as provisions for restoring the hill country landscape.
