PALMER EVENT CENTER

This public work of 48 carvings is entitled, “For Jeep, With Love” and is located at Austin’s community center near Town Lake. For sculptural ideas the lead designer, Holly Kincannon, looked to Texas’ geological past as a conceptual starting point. Inspired by the textures and forms of early nautical life, Holly and her team lifted, and fictionalized the elements to create an imaginative array of fossilized forms. Regarding the overall architectural concept the original proposal was to place a large group of organically-styled carvings in an alternating pattern so that the building’s surface would be boldly articulated.  This winning design was commissioned by Art in Public Places, and included 130 carvings that were to wrap around three-dimensional forms namely piers and corners to adjacent walls. Due to budget cuts, the work was reduced to a single elevation on Barton Springs Rd. Still, this award winning project is a creative response to the promotion of nature’s wonders.
